BRAIN HEALTH

The Manitoba Government has committed to incorporating the importance of brain health messaging into provincial healthy living campaigns.

Manitobans need to know personal strategies that will assist them to protect their brain health. They must also be able to recognize the symptoms of dementia, realize the importance of early diagnosis and know how to seek a diagnosis..

Teaching people principles of healthy living is the most effective way to reduce health care costs. If all adult Canadians without dementia were to raise their level of physical activity and adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle, the onset of dementia could be delayed by two years. Not only would this reduce health care costs, it would also reduce:

  • The number of people diagnosed with dementia.
  • The need for health resources such as community care services and long term care spaces.
  • The pressure on family care providers. **From Rising Tide: The Impact of Dementia on Canadian Society, 2010

  • Creating awareness about how to recognize the symptoms of dementia and seek a diagnosis enables a person to receive medical assistance sooner and make important plans for their future care.

We will keep you posted as to the progress of this initiative as it moves forward with the Manitoba Government.
