    (A) Adult Day Clubs - A Day Away!
    Adult day clubs offer valuable respite for caregivers and community socialization for people with dementia. Lions Housing staff will provide answers to your questions and lead you through a variety of activities that can be shared with family and friends. (Maximum participants 50)

    Gain insight into the causes, treatments, challenges and progression of vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia and other less common dementias. Dr. Galit Hasdan

    (D) What Every Caregiver Needs to Know About Living/Dying with Dementia
    Consider the benefits of exploring end of life issues early in the disease process, interventions that may not be helpful in late stage dementia and changes that suggest death is near. Kath Murray

    (E) Session One: Valuing People with Dementia
    Caregivers will learn communication strategies that result in better care, with less stress, for themselves and the person for whom they are providing care. Dr. J.B. Orange
  • 1:00 pm - 2:15 pm: Afternoon Concurrent Sessions

    (F) History 101
    Making connections with people with dementia begins with knowing the person. This interactive workshop identifies the significance of life history and how to maximize time together. (Maximum participants 50) Cheryl Demasi, Joyce Klassen & Grace Loewen

    (G) Is Dad Safe to Drive?
    Driving cessation is often met with opposition by people with dementia as their desire to maintain independence is threatened. Learn more about when and how to introduce this discussion with the person for whom you are caring. Victoria MacDonald

    (H) Session Two: Valuing People with Dementia
    Caregivers will learn communication strategies that result in better care, with less stress, for themselves and the person for whom they are providing care. Dr. J.B. Orange (Participation in Session One (E) is recommended, but not a requirement)

    (I) Visual & Audiotory Care Needs of People with Dementia
    Maintaining the visual & auditory care needs of people with dementia requires high levels of attention by caregivers. Helpful tips that can enhance independence, self-confidence and social connectivity will be discussed. Karen McCormac & Dr. Christine Dino

    (J) An Individualized Approach to Managing Challenging Behaviours
    Dementia leads to challenging behavioural reactions when people lose their ability to meet their needs. Learn to identify the meaning behind the behaviour and hear about strategies to change behaviours so that a person’s needs are being met in a safe, non-disruptive manner. Lesley Koven

    Sharing and experiencing music can have positive results for people with dementia and their caregivers. Music therapist Katy Jacobs will help us to understand and experience the Power of Music! Katy Jacobs
  • 3:45 pm - 4:00 pm: Closing Comments - Norma J. Kirkby, PHEc, Program Director Alzheimer Society of Manitoba
