National Day of Action
Join us on January 28, 2026, as we come together to show support for those living with dementia and help reduce stigma.
Together, we can end stigma and spread hope
On January 28, Alzheimer Societies nationwide unite to participate in a coordinated Day of Action to reduce stigma surrounding dementia.
You’re invited to wear a Forget Me Not pin, share a photo and tag the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba all throughout January. You can pick up your pin and make a donation at Alzheimer Society offices across Manitoba. Or, you can help by making an online donation today.
Dementia stigma in Canada
By 2030, researchers project that nearly 1 million people in Canada could be living with dementia.
Awareness is the first step to fighting stigma, combined with advocating for human rights and pushing for policy change through the national dementia strategy.
Stigma against dementia encompasses any negative attitude or discriminatory behaviour against people living with dementia, based on their condition or diagnosis. When a disease is as prevalent as dementia, yet still poorly understood, it’s easy for false beliefs to spread. These negative beliefs and negative attitudes harm people living with dementia and care partners, affecting their self-worth and quality of life.
New national polling with Leger shows that many Canadians are concerned about dementia, yet hesitate to seek information or talk about it.
Key national polling insights include:
- 53% of Canadians are worried about developing dementia
- 45% fear losing independence or becoming a burden if diagnosed with dementia
- 24% would prefer not to know if they had dementia
- 46% are unsure where to find help or information
Stigma delays diagnosis, limits access to support, and isolates people who need connection the most.
How to participate in the Day of Action

- Wear the Forget Me Not pin on January 28 – The Forget Me Not is a reminder of our shared commitment to breaking stigma around dementia and supporting people living with the disease.
- Make a donation – All funding helps families living with dementia in Manitoba so they have a place to turn to for support
- Share a message of support – Talking about dementia reduces stigma. When we speak openly, share stories, and seek information, people navigating the disease feel less alone. Share a supportive message on social media, to friends and family or to your community and government leaders.
- Watch their stories – Understanding is the first step to growing awareness. Visit our YouTube channel to learn more about the impact of community and connection for those living with dementia:
