A meaningful way to give back: Volunteer with us

You can make a positive difference for people living with dementia.

On his drive home from the final Minds in Motion session of 2025, Greg Mortimer felt something settle in: a calm, steady sense of purpose. The program participants had thanked him and the other volunteers on their way out earlier, already looking forward to January.

“I made a positive difference in their lives,” Greg says. “Even if it was only for 3 hours a week during their difficult journey with dementia.”

That feeling stayed with him long after he left the building.

Greg began volunteering after caring for his wife, Dianna, who lived with frontotemporal dementia. He knows the stress families carry and how powerful a warm, understanding space can be. Volunteering at Minds in Motion lets him offer that support to others.

He helps with activities, chats with participants and care partners, and brings a sense of ease into the room. He likes to say, “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.” What means the most to him is seeing that same kindness in the Society’s staff. It’s a community that feels aligned with who he is.

Volunteering has changed Greg’s life, too. After years of caregiving, he wondered what his days would look like moving forward. Contributing his time brought a sense of direction.

“If you can show someone they can survive this, that means something,” he says. It gives him joy, but also something deeper: a reason to show up.

He sees the impact on Minds in Motion participants every week. People relax. Care partners exhale. Someone who walks in quietly leaves laughing. Greg carries those moments with him. He knows how rare it is to find a place where people feel seen while living with something as heavy as dementia.

Join our team of volunteers!

Volunteers help make that kind of openness possible. They remind families they’re not doing this alone. If you’ve ever considered volunteering or are looking for a way to help others in your community, it’s a great time to get involved with the Society!

New and returning programming at the Alzheimer Society will be coming in 2026, and we need a strong team of volunteers to help make these possible. You can help make a difference in a way that stays with people long after they leave the room. And like Greg, you might find it gives something back to you, too
