Issues for action
Help us make dementia care a health priority.
Your voice matters.
Everyone living with dementia deserves to feel safe, accepted, respected and supported and their care partners should have meaningful support when they need it. Reach out to us with your concerns at alzmb@alzheimer.mb.ca or 1-800-378-6699.
The importance of dementia advocacy
Nine people in Manitoba are newly diagnosed with dementia every day. For every person diagnosed, there are several care partners impacted. Whether we care for someone living with dementia, have a family member, friend or neighbour living with the disease, or have signs and symptoms of dementia ourselves, we can all benefit from improved care systems.
We are currently working toward these priorities:
- Improved housing options for seniors, including those living with dementia
- Additional financial support for care partners
- Strategies for building more dementia-friendly communities
- Improved home care supports
- Improved support to navigate the healthcare system

Over 20,300 Manitobans live with dementia.
This number is set to double within one generation as our population ages. That will come with an increased 1.25 billion dollar cost to our economy. By 2038, families and friends will contribute more than 22 million hours a year caring for those living with dementia.
Care Partner self-advocacy
As a care partner for someone living with dementia, you might sometimes find yourself needing to speak up —for them or yourself. Advocacy means sharing your concerns and asking family, community care providers or health professionals to take action. It helps to have strong communication and problem-solving skills — and a little persistence can go a long way.
You can find several fact sheets in our resource library that can guide you through your advocacy. You can also contact us if you need more information or support.
