Finding a community of support at Care4u
Read how attending the Care4u Family Conference left a lasting impact for Alberto.

When Alberto “Bogs” Sangalang walked into the Care4u Family Conference back in October 2025, he carried a mix of curiosity, hope and fear. He knew the day would have a big impact for both him and his wife, Sonia, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease just weeks earlier.
Sonia’s diagnosis brought some clarity about the changes Bogs had been noticing in his wife’s personality, mood and behaviours. Dementia was new to both of them, and Bogs began looking for more information right away.
“Living with dementia is not a choice, but it becomes a part of many of our earthly journeys,” he says. “It is tough for the whole family, especially for the care partner. Acceptance is an important step to try to make early on.”
As Bogs began researching dementia to learn more about the disease, he came across the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba and its upcoming conference. He decided to attend, hopeful it would help him and his wife feel more prepared for the road ahead.
“The conference provided so much information and guidance, shared through the speakers, Alzheimer Society staff and many resource booths,” Bogs says. “It really felt like an atmosphere of care and support — like the community was coming together as one. I realized that I wasn’t alone.”
By the end of the day, Bogs felt a sense of relief. He’d gained a deeper understanding of dementia, how differently it can affect each person, and what the future might hold as the disease progresses.
“Care4u helped me realize that understanding and learning more about this disease will assist me a lot as a care partner,” he says. “When I’m accepting of dementia myself, I can approach caregiving and the challenges and changes we may face as a couple in a more accepting way too.”
This year’s Care4u Family Conference takes place on Saturday, October 17 at the Victoria Inn Hotel & Convention Centre in Winnipeg. Registration is $50 and includes a buffet lunch and access to a full day of education and support for care partners. Sessions will cover everything from daily care strategies and responsive behaviours to legal matters and end-of-life care.
“There’s not always a solution to every problem you’ll encounter with dementia, but being with a group of other care partners who truly understand what you’re going through helps a lot,” Bogs says. “Care4u gives you the chance to experience that sense of togetherness and community.”
