Honouring a mother’s love

Learn why Linda chose to honour her mothers’ legacies through her Will.

After Linda van den Broek’s mom and mother-in-law both passed away from dementia, Linda chose to honour their legacies by making a charitable gift in her Will to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

Evelyn

Evelyn Shanley, Linda’s mom

Linda’s mom, Evelyn Shanley, was born in Allahabad, India. Evelyn came to Canada in 1964, and was beloved among her friends and family. Her family grew up happy, singing and loving life.

“Mom was hard-working and completely happy-go-lucky,” says Linda.

A few years ago, Linda and her family started to notice some changes in her mom’s behaviour. Evelyn was starting to forget things, and would leave notes for herself around the house.

Evelyn received a dementia diagnosis, and Linda turned to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba for help and support. Linda says learning how to navigate dementia was a big part her family’s life.

“During one of the most difficult times our family faced, the Alzheimer Society provided us with compassion, guidance and support when we needed it most. I will always be grateful for that,” she says.

Doreen

Linda’s mother-in-law, Doreen Seaford, was an only parent after losing her husband early in life.

Jeff Seaford, Linda’s husband, says his mom was one of the strongest people he’s ever known.

“If you met Doreen, you’d think she was introverted, but once you broke through that wall, she had this hilarious personality,” he says.

A few years after Evelyn’s diagnosis, Linda and Jeff slowly started to see Doreen was also showing signs of dementia.

“Things were becoming rearranged and nothing was in order anymore,” says Jeff.

Linda knew right away to turn to the Alzheimer Society again for guidance, and she was able to help her family and Doreen receive a diagnosis. Linda says her mom helped pave the way for them to see the signs of Alzheimer’s in Doreen.

Cherished memories

“The memories of my mom and mother-in-law regularly appear on my phone, bringing back cherished moments that always make me smile. We miss them every single day, but those memories are a beautiful reminder of how fortunate we were to have them in our lives,” says Linda.

After Evelyn and Doreen passed away, Linda decided to name the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba as a beneficiary in her Will.

“By including the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba in my Will, I hope to leave a lasting legacy that honours the women we loved so dearly and helps ensure that other families facing this heartbreaking disease have somewhere to turn for the same kindness, understanding and support that meant so much to us,” says Linda.
