The Landmark Studies
More than 600,000 Canadians live with dementia. Regardless of the type of dementia, the effects of the disease have a deep impact on families, friends and communities. As our population ages, so too will the number of people affected. To address this need, we must first understand dementia in the Canadian context.
Reporting on dementia in Canada
The Landmark Study is a series of three reports produced by the Alzheimer Society of Canada to better understand the impacts of dementia in Canada over a 30-year period (2020 – 2050).
The first report, from 2022, looked at overall dementia numbers. The second report, released in 2024, looks at dementia across demographic groups. The third report, which is still in development, will look at the economic impacts of dementia.
These studies allow us to provide estimates and forecasts of the rates of dementia within our national and provincial populations over time.

Navigating the Path Forward for Dementia Care in Canada
Released in 2022, this first Landmark Study examines the direction of dementia in Canada, care needs, risk reduction and regional differences.
Using these findings, the study points to some of the actions that can lead to a positive outcome for people living with dementia and their care partners.

The Many Faces of Dementia in Canada
Building on the insights from the first Landmark Study, this second volume, released in 2024, is one of the first studies that seeks to better understand the demographics and personal circumstances of those affected by dementia in Canada. Understanding the unique needs and experiences of diverse communities is critical to improving the quality of life for people living with dementia and their care partners.
