Winter driving & dementia
Stay safe on the road this winter with the Driving & Dementia Roadmap website
Dementia causes changes that can affect our ability to drive. Many people experiencing early signs of dementia can continue to drive safely and competently for some time. However, because of the progressive nature of the disease, it’s important to be aware of any changes in driving patterns in those living with dementia.

These changes can include:
- Forgetting to signal, check blind spots or use mirrors
- Getting lost in familiar areas
- Being unable to correctly judge distances
- Failing to follow road signs correctly or use good judgment to make safe driving decisions
- Getting into small accidents or hitting curbs
- Difficulty paying attention
On top of these, the winter season brings additional driving challenges like bad weather and poor road conditions.
To help you prepare for winter driving, visit the Driving & Dementia Roadmap website to find information and support on the many challenges that driving poses for people living with dementia, their family and friends.
