Care4u Family Conference: A Day for Care Partners

Discover a space to reflect, slow down & absorb new ideas

As a former nurse, Denise Jacobs got used to moving through life at a quick pace. So when her husband David was diagnosed with dementia, she started doing what came naturally — she sprang into action, trying to stay one step ahead.

But dementia is a complex disease, and no matter how carefully you plan or how fast you move, there may still be moments that leave you feeling overwhelmed.

“I learned that as a caregiver, you have to slow down,” Denise says. “Sometimes, you just have to wait and be patient.”

That’s one of the lessons she took away from last year’s Care4u Family Conference, after hearing a presentation about improving communication between care partners and people living with dementia. For Denise, it reinforced what she already knew — and gave her the reminder she needed to put patience into practice.

At first, the changes were small, but over time, David’s memory, balance and independence have shifted. Denise now finds herself managing more of the household responsibilities and it’s not always easy, but she’s open and honest about it and leans on the Alzheimer Society when she needs support.

“The programs and staff at Alzheimer Society have been very helpful, giving me tools to turn back to when I need them,” Denise says.

That support is also what led her to attend Care4u last year. This day of learning helps care partners grow their understanding of dementia with expertise and guidance from health and community professionals.

Denise enjoyed the presentations but also enjoyed simply connecting with other care partners at the conference. Care4u gave her space to reflect, slow down and absorb new ideas.

This year’s Care4u Family Conference takes place on Saturday, October 18 at the Victoria Inn Hotel & Convention Centre in Winnipeg. Registration is $50 and includes a buffet lunch and access to a full day of education and support for care partners. Sessions will cover everything from daily care strategies and responsive behaviours to legal matters and end-of-life care.

“I encourage other care partners to register,” Denise says. “You may find it’s exactly what you need.”
