National Caregiver Day

Curtis & Nancy McRae
Tuesday, April 1 is National Caregiver Day – a day to celebrate and honour Canadian carers. Care partners play an integral role in the dementia journey and we recognize their commitment to providing care despite the many challenges they may have faced.
This month, we’d like to highlight Curtis McRae, a care partner to his wife, Nancy, who was diagnosed with young-onset dementia in 2022. Curtis and Nancy have faced unique challenges in navigating young-onset dementia, but Curtis found a community of support when he began attending a young-onset support group for care partners.
“No one can be fully prepared when working with an ever-changing disease, but the Society’s support groups really open your eyes to what might be coming next and, most importantly, possible solutions for the challenges you may face,” Curtis says.
“The support groups have been a valuable asset to me and a place I turn to find information, express my feelings and relax. I rarely miss a support group. I attend ones held over Zoom, so I can access them no matter where I am. I think our cats really appreciate the meetings as well, they all seem to steal some screen time.”
Thank you to Curtis and all the other care partners in our community for the incredible work you do every day to support those living with dementia.
If you’d like to read more about Curtis and Nancy’s journey with dementia, check out our Spring 2024 newsletter story: Understanding Young-onset Dementia.
Our First Link Client Support Team is here to help all people living with dementia and care partners. If you’re facing caregiving challenges or need support, call us anytime at 204-943-6622 (Winnipeg) / 1-800-378-6622 (Manitoba) or email alzmb@alzheimer.mb.ca. Happy National Volunteer Week!

Left to right: Lynne Timmy (past Walk volunteer), Allison Woodward (previous Events Coordinator) and Jan Dowling
April 27 – May 3 is National Volunteer Week, and we would like to give a special thanks to all our amazing volunteers who dedicate thier time and effort throughout the year facilitating support groups, helping run our Minds in Motion® program, or leaning a hand with our annual events like our Alzheimer Gala and the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s – which is just around the corner!
Did you know it takes over 50 volunteers to run the Walk each year? For Jan Dowling, volunteering at the Walk is an opportunity to give back to an organization and community that’s given her family help and guidance.
“My mother had Alzheimer’s and we went through many challenging times. The Alzheimer’s Society was there and gave us such great support, especially to my dad,” Jan says.
“When the Alzheimer Society says ‘you are not alone, we are here for you,’ they are!”
We are so grateful to Jan and all our volunteers – you truly make a difference to Manitobans affected by dementia.
Check out our social media during National Volunteer Week because we’ll be sharing more about our incredible volunteers!
