National Volunteer Week #nvw2020

It’s National Volunteer Week and we want to thank our volunteers for their hard work and dedication this past year. Our volunteers bring a huge variety of different interests and skills, and they delve into tasks with devotion. We appreciate every single one of these special people.

Volunteer Highlight: Joan

The Alzheimer Society was very supportive for me when my mom had dementia. Now, I have an opportunity to give back… just a little.

I have volunteered with the Minds in Motion® program for a few sessions, and it has been a very positive experience. The program includes physical activities, social activities (tea or coffee with cookies is always welcomed!) and mental stimulation through games and activities. It’s encouraging to see our participants come back week after week, looking forward to the activities. My reward is getting to know so many wonderful people. I am grateful for the opportunity to spend a few hours being part of the Minds in Motion program.

Thinking about why I volunteer has brought back a lot of memories for me about my mom. When my dad passed away, it became apparent that something was wrong. At the time, my husband and I were working and raising our young family, so somehow, we didn’t realize Mom’s dementia was so bad.

That’s where the Alzheimer Society came in. I remember feeling so lost, so bewildered, so scared. I contacted them and was given advice and support. I attended a workshop that really gave me a lot of information. They provided just the support I needed at a very stressful time. For that, I will always be grateful.
