From Six to 16:
A Workshop to Help Children and Youth Understand Dementia
Is there a child or grandchild in your home who is struggling to understand the changes in a family member who has Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia? It may be a grandparent, aunt, uncle or family friend – or even a parent.
Help is available for young people in this situation. The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba is offering a new workshop called From Six to 16: A Workshop to Help Children and Youth Understand Dementia. The workshop will provide a safe environment for young people who want to understand more.

What to Expect
The ½ day workshop is facilitated by the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, clinical and community professionals. Here is a sneak peek at the sessions:
Sharing Circle with Dr. Lesley Koven
Dr. Lesley Koven, clinical psychologist, will lead the “sharing circle” where participants will be invited to share their experiences and learn from other children travelling similar journeys. An introduction to dementia, the changes that occur in the brain and some of the more common behavioural changes will be explored.
Dementia in the House with Lorlie Barkman
Cartoonist and Spiritual Care Leader Lorlie Barkman links art with humour to explore real-life situations within the children’s homes. Lorlie is the cartoonist/author of “Remember Dad,” a narrative with illustrations linking Lorlie with his father through memories of their life together as his father progressed in his disease.
Experience Dementia
Participants will: be led through experiential exercises reflecting how people with dementia can process information, learn tips for effective communication and receive new ideas on how to share meaningful time together with family or friends experiencing dementia.
