WAM 2013

September is World Alzheimer Month, an international initiative to raise awareness about dementia and the challenges associated with the disease.

The theme for World Alzheimer’s Month 2013 is ‘Dementia: A Journey of Caring’.

Alzheimer Societies across the world will focus their activities on creating awareness by offering a range of programs and events.

Activities will include educational seminars, workshops and enjoyable social events for people with dementia and their caregivers.

In Manitoba, there are several ways you can support World Alzheimer’s Month.

Read the ADI World Alzheimer Report 2013

Click HERE to read a copy of the World Alzheimer Report 2013, titled “A Journey of Caring, An Analysis of Long-Term Care for Dementia.

Dementia exists in your country, in your region or state, in your community. It knows no boundaries.

In 2010, 36 million people were living with dementia worldwide. This number is set to increase to 66 million by 2030 and 115 million by 2050.

Dementia not only affects the person themselves, but also impacts  families, caregivers, communities and societies on a local, national and international scale.

Today in Manitoba, caregivers spend over 9 million hours of  informal unpaid care.
While there are many positive aspects of caring, carers  of people with dementia are very likely to experience strain, psychological illness and/or major depression. There is  help available. The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba offers support, education and  information to help you along your caregiver journey.
This World Alzheimer’s Month, we encourage you to find out more and help improve the lives of people affected by Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia.

The myths about dementia reinforce the stigma that surrounds it. Below, “Breaking the Myths” discusses some of the key truths about dementia.

  • Dementia is NOT a normal part of aging.
  • Although dementia is most common in older people, it can occur in those aged under 65.
  • There are many things that can be done to help and support people with dementia and their caregivers.
  • A person with dementia is still a person, and often retains a strong sense of self into the late stages of the disease.

We hope you join us here in Manitoba  to help break  down the barriers of stigma around dementia and raise awareness about the  Society as the go-to resource for support, information and education.
